Schools are a place where children spend a substantial time of their day. Education provided in schools therefore plays a significant role in nurturing the social, cognitive and emotional development of a child. With the passing of the Mental Health Bill in 2017, education in schools is now mandated to reach beyond academic goals, by focussing on the social and mental well-being of children. The Apni Shala Fellowship is an on-field initiative aimed at facilitating this movement towards a better education for children.
the fellowship journey
The Apni Shala Fellowship is a one-year full-time, paid fellowship programme for graduates from any discipline, with a dream to change the way children learn. It is an opportunity for aspiring educators, counsellors and facilitators to hone their skills with on-field experience to develop not just as facilitators, but as the country’s advocates for mental well-being of children. In the way it is designed, the Fellowship gives youth the platform to start out on their journey of self-discovery, with the potential to join the Apni Shala team in a permanent role at the end of the one year period!
Apni Shala Fellows are the frontrunners of the mental wellbeing and education movement we support. Fellows first undergo a rigorous training programme that helps them learn and unlearn their ideas about education and what it should be. They are then a part of a continuous learning process where they build their abilities to work directly with children. At every step of the way, an Apni Shala Fellow actively delivers in-class workshops, with a special focus on children attending low-fee schools and belonging to low-income communities in Mumbai. Fellows also engage with parents, teachers, headmasters and the community itself. Throughout, Apni Shala’s team of trainers and mentors will guide the Fellow through this refreshing, challenging and transformational journey.
